These locomotives are articulated in 3 parts with the boiler mounted in between 2 sets of driving wheels with water tank and coal bunker situated engine units. Articulation permits these locomotives to negotiate curves and lighter rails that might restrict large rigid-framed locomotives. The Garratt designed aimed to double the power of conventional locomotives reducing the need for multiple locomotives and crew. Due to the increase of freight traffic in Queensland, these locomotives were employed to work on single lines built with light rail which included many wooden trestle bridges. Because of insufficient funds to replace the 56kms (35 miles) of bridges these locomotives were seen as a satisfactory solution as they could pull the load of 2 conventional engines with the same axle load greatly increasing the capacity of the lines.
